Welcome to It is Well with my Soul

Welcome Family, Neighbors, and Fans and Friends of David Gregory Pfohl!

For many months now I have wanted to create a place of community where we can share with you our Journey with David; the good, the bad, the ugly, and the funny! A day doesn't go by that we are not asked; "How is David?, How are you? Is there anything we can do? How can we help? What exactly is Batten's Disease?" We will do our best to share with you as honestly and openly as possible. Be warned, there may be days we will be brutally raw and other days you will think we are being flippant about David's disease. Welcome to our journey.

Why the name, It is Well With My Soul? If you open David's Fayetteville Manlius Year Book you will find the following words under David's picture, "What ever my lot Thou has taught me to say, It is well with my soul?" For weeks we had tried to help David chose a quote we could use but David was never satisfied. The day finally came that it was due and David tried to tell his Vision Specialist, Donna Richards, what he wanted written. Unfortunately all he could come up with were a couple words:

River, Soul & Well

Donna called me and asked is this one of David's favorite bible verses? Being the seminary trained pastor that I am I said, "I have no idea!" I encouraged her to Google it. When she did, she found the words to It is Well With My Soul, written by Horatio Spafford. When she got to the line, "What ever my lot Thou hast taught me to say, It is well with my soul, he yelled, "That's it, that's what I want!"

So we want you to know, as we walk this journey together with you that It is Well With Our Souls! We thank you for your interest, your love, your prayers, and your support. We will try to be faithful in updating you. Feel free to pass this on to anyone you like.

  1. What a wonderful way to keep us all updated about the journey your family is facing, as well as help you to have a place to journal the raw feelings and emotions. I have made a new close friend through a blog of hers, simply because she chose to put her feelings out there and let us all walk with her on the journey of grief after losing her 6 month old son suddenly, a year ago. I originally began following her blog because I couldn't fathom how I would ever carry on if I were to lose one of my precious babies. I wanted to see if there was any support I could offer to her or her family as they struggled through the pain. What I found instead was a steadfast warrior, determined to fight the battles that satan had placed in front of her, always shining and being the witness for Christ that she is. I know in my heart and soul that you will do the same with not only this blog, but David's life as well. My heart goes out to you and my prayers will be with you every day.

  5. I believe we will all be blessed to be part of this community. Thank you for creating this blog to allow us to understand the struggles, the pain, the tears, the joy, the power of God's hand in your every day life. I must admit I feel so helpless when I ask about David and than don't do anything! I pray that the Lord uses this site to make a difference for His Kingdom. I love you guys,

  6. Thank you for including us in the journey that you and Brenda are on. This will help us to better understand the hard path that you both are walking. I hope that as you share "life with David" with us, that you will feel our prayers as we daily lift you, Brenda, Chris, Daniel, and David up to the Lord, and be encouraged because we love you guys and want to walk this path with our arms around you, and support and care for you in whatever ways we can. God bless, Dedie

  7. Warren,
Thank you for letting us along with you on this journey. You can not imagine how important it was for us to have everyone along with us during Evelyn's illness. I printed all of the updates and messages for her several weeks ago. As she read them is was a good way to remember where she has been and how many of you were praying and supporting us. God Bless and Thank You! Wayne & Evelyn

  8. Thanks for the touching account of your son's condition. I must admit I had never heard of Batten disease. I'm sure the sense of helplessness to remedy it is a deep grief to you. But what a blessing to know that, according to the Word of God, we'll be receiving wonderful new bodies one day, bodies not subject to pain and death (Rev. 21:4).

I was blessed by the story behind the title for your blog. Horatio Spafford's hymn, "It Is Well," is one of my favourites--I've sung it as a solo many times. In recent weeks I've been conducting a favourite hymn poll on my own blog, Wordwise Hymns. Usually, I've found that "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art" rank at the top of such surveys. But in this case, "It is Well" beats the other two by a wide margin. May have something to do with the uncertain tenor of the times.

May the Lord bless and encourage you today.
